In the World Championship of Trains, the young steam locomotive Rusty seems to be hopelessly outmatched against the superstars Diesel locomotive Greaseball and Electric locomotive Electra. Also new is the first-class car Pearl. For Rusty, it’s love at first sight. Nevertheless, Pearl is convinced by Electra to race with him. Discouraged, Rusty does not participate in the championship and is represented by the old steam locomotive Mama. With her last (steam) strength, she emerges as the winner of the race. In the grand finale, Rusty must represent the exhausted Mama and asks the legendary Starlight Express for help. Will Rusty win and capture Pearl's heart forever?
