Coastal Pearl Friuli-Venezia Giulia

The region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, located in the northeastern part of Italy, extends from the Adriatic Sea to Carinthia in Austria. To the east, it borders Slovenia, and to the west, it borders Veneto. The region impresses with the calm and inviting beauty of its mountain and hill landscapes, as well as the seemingly endless sandy beaches along the Adriatic.

Day 1 | Arrival

Departure in the morning and drive to Lignano Sabbiadoro. Check-in and dinner at the hotel.

Day 2 | Grado and Aquileia

Drive to Grado. The town is located on an island and has a picturesque old town with magnificent Romanesque sacred buildings. Sightseeing and then continue to Aquileia. The city was an important late antique imperial residence and one of the most significant patriarchates in Italy. You will visit the archaeological zone, and those who wish can afterwards visit the Romanesque basilica with its unique mosaic floor. To conclude the day, we invite you to a wine tasting with a small snack.

Day 3 | Muggia and Trieste

Today you will first travel to the small coastal town of Muggia, which is directly opposite Trieste on the Istrian Adriatic coast. The charming atmosphere in the town is distinctly Venetian. Late in the morning, it’s time to set sail for a boat trip from Muggia to Trieste. Upon arrival, your sightseeing begins at Piazza dell’Unità, perhaps the most beautiful square in Italy. Afterwards, cafés and ice cream parlors invite you to relax.

Day 4 | Udine and San Daniele

Look forward to Udine today. The nearly 400 years of Venetian rule are still visible today, especially in the main square of the city, the “Piazza della Libertà,” with its unique architectural ambiance. During a guided tour, you will learn about the interesting sights of Udine. Afterwards, you have free time for your own activities before continuing to San Daniele, famous for its namesake ham. Here, during a visit to a ham factory, you will become familiar with the production of this delicacy. Afterwards, you can strengthen yourself with a lunch menu before returning to your hotel.

Day 5 | Day at leisure

How about a day at the sea? Lignano Sabbiadoro offers eight kilometers of fine, golden sandy beach and clean sea. The historic center, a pedestrian zone, also invites you to stroll and linger.

Day 6 | Gorizia and Cividale del Friuli

Drive to Gorizia. Rich in history and art, the city, located on the border with Slovenia, has always been a meeting point for the most important European cultures. After a free lunch break, you will continue to Cividale del Friuli. During a walk through the picturesque old town, you will get to know all the sights worth seeing. The old town is rich in historically significant squares and monuments. From the Piazza del Duomo, you can reach the Tempietto Longobardo. The outstanding artworks inside make it a monument of the highest esteem. Since 2011, the temple has been part of the World Heritage Site.

Day 7 | Duino Castle – Rilke Path – Palmanova

Today you will travel to Duino Castle, an impressive building that was built in the 14th century on the remains of a Roman outpost. After a visit, you will start a walk along the cliffs, the Rilke Path (weather permitting, sturdy footwear required). The path is about 2 km long, and the views of both the Gulf of Trieste and Duino Castle are truly unique. In the early afternoon, you will reach Palmanova. Since 2017, Palmanova has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city will surely impress you with numerous buildings from the Renaissance period.

Day 8 | Return journey
