Between Hallertau and Altmühltal
Bad Gögging - in the heart of Bavaria!
Your holiday destination Bad Gögging is located in the center of the picturesque landscapes of Altmühltal and Hallertau. Bad Gögging is one of the oldest spa towns in Germany and the only health resort in Bavaria that has three locally sourced, state-recognized natural remedies – sulfur water, natural moor, and thermal water. Hallertau, also known as Holledau, is the home of hops and the largest contiguous hop-growing area in the world. The region is characterized by its gentle hills and extensive hop gardens. The holiday region of Altmühltal Nature Park is a blend of natural experiences and cultural history, enticing visitors with idyllic landscapes, bizarre rock formations, and old Bavarian traditions.
Travel Features
Itinerary
Day 1 | Bad Gögging
In the morning, travel towards Bavaria. In Schwäbisch Hall, you will make a sightseeing stop with a guided city tour. Covered bridges, impressive medieval buildings, half-timbered houses, and narrow alleys tell 2,500 years of history. After some free time, you will continue your journey to Bad Gögging. Check into your room and have dinner at the hotel.
Day 2 | Towpath on the Canal – Altmühltal
With an experienced tour guide, you will start your day trip. The journey takes you along a part of the old Roman road, along the Upper German-Rhaetian Limes, to Berching. You can look forward to a historical towpath ride on the Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal, which was built by Ludwig I of Bavaria for the transport of goods. As in the past, the barge is pulled by a horse along a towpath by the river. (Lock passage is not possible during low water). Once back on land, the return journey takes you through the romantic Altmühltal to Kelheim. You will cross the Danube-Main Canal and the Danube, with a view of the Liberation Hall, passing the cohort castle Abusina – the largest and oldest Roman archaeological site in Bavaria – and return to the hotel.
Day 3 | Ingolstadt
The half-day trip takes you to Ingolstadt, a city with medieval charm and impressive cultural heritage. Discover the gem on the Danube together with a certified city guide. Afterwards, you will have free time for your own explorations and shopping. Return to the hotel in the early afternoon. Enjoy your free time until dinner in the hotel's wellness area.
Day 4 | Tour of Hallertau
You will start with a guided walk to the center of Bad Gögging. Then, you will embark on a tour by bus with a local guide through the largest contiguous hop-growing region in the world, Hallertau. Here, the "most Bavarian" of all plants – hops – has been cultivated for over 200 years. First, you will arrive in Neustadt an der Donau, the city with the oldest Bavarian city rights. In Wolnzach, you will visit the German Hop Museum and learn everything worth knowing about hops. From botany to brewing beer, from cultivation to hop trading, from history to the present. Return via Mainburg, the hop center, Siegenburg with its typical Bavarian marketplace featuring a church, a Marian column, and taverns. The day concludes in Abensberg at one of the oldest breweries in the world. Visit the Kuchlbauer Brewery with the experience world designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser.
Day 5 | Return Journey
Today it is time to say goodbye. In the baroque city of Erlangen, with many historical buildings and a vibrant city center, you will make a stop. You will have free time and then the return journey will commence.
