Original Glacier and Bernina Express

The most popular train routes in Switzerland are undoubtedly the Bernina and Glacier Express. The surprising scenic diversity of the most popular Swiss alpine trains is legendary. Experience the journey through the Rhine Gorge and over the Oberalp Pass in the comfortable panoramic car of the Glacier Express, whose most fascinating section and the next day the entire route of the Bernina Express, which leads through the Albula and over the Bernina Pass to Tirano in Italy and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008. And all of this from the location in Laax, without any hotel changes!

Day 1 | Arrival

Departure in the morning and drive to Laax in Switzerland. Check into the hotel and dinner.

Day 2 | Glacier Express

After breakfast, you will drive to Andermatt. Let yourself be enchanted by the charming historic village center and take a walk through the streets. In the afternoon, board the original Glacier Express. In the panoramic car, you will travel through remote valleys, past rugged cliffs, idyllic mountain villages, through the Rhine Gorge, and over the 2,033 m high Oberalp Pass to Chur. After arriving in the late afternoon, return by bus to the hotel. Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3 | Il Spir and Zillis

In the morning, you will take a guided walk to the Il Spir viewpoint (about 1 hour). Enjoy a magnificent view of the Rhine Gorge (sturdy footwear recommended). Those who are not good on foot can use the time for a stroll by the lake. In the afternoon, an excursion to the Via Mala Gorge and Zillis is on the agenda. The Church of St. Martin is located in the village center of Zillis and is a Romanesque hall church, world-famous for its painted church ceiling, which was created in the first half of the 12th century. It consists of seventeen picture series of nine fields each, totaling 153 square panels. The border fields are adorned with maritime motifs (mythical creatures, sea monsters, ship scenes), while the inner fields depict the life story of Jesus and the legend of Saint Martin. The similarity of the Zillis ceiling to world maps of that time, which show the Earth as a disc surrounded by the primordial sea, is striking. You will return to your hotel for dinner.

Day 4 | Bernina Express

Today you will travel to Tiefencastel. Here you will experience one of the most spectacular railway crossings of the Alps. The Bernina line was not declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site by chance. The Bernina Express connects language regions and cultures – it winds through spiral tunnels, over its landmark, the Landwasser Viaduct, and over the legendary circular viaduct at Brusio. And all this without cogwheel support, all the way up to the glacier sparkle of Piz Bernina at the Bernina Pass at 2,253 m. You will travel in the panoramic car of the Bernina Express from Tiefencastel through the Albula and over the Bernina Pass to Tirano in Italy. You will have the opportunity to stroll through the old town with noble mansions such as Palazzo Salis with its typically Italian garden or Palazzo d'Oro Lambertenghi. Walk in the footsteps of Ludovico Sforza and Leonardo da Vinci. Afterwards, you will return by bus over the Bernina Pass to St. Moritz. In the glamorous winter sports resort, you will have free time. St. Moritz owes its significance to its healing springs, which are the origin of the St. Moritz spa and bath tradition. In the evening, return to Laax and dinner.

Day 5 | Departure

One last cozy breakfast, then it's time to say goodbye to the Graubünden alpine world and begin your journey home.
