Travel Itinerary
Day 1 | Arrival – Cycling around Münster
Departure in the morning and travel to Münster. During lunchtime, you have some free time before exploring the city by bike, the favorite mode of transportation for the people of Münster, and experiencing the bike-friendly metropolis comfortably from the saddle. Highlights include the Aasee as a large recreational area, which features many sculptures from past exhibitions. The magnificent Residenzschloss of Münster at Schlossplatz houses the administration of the Westfälische Wilhelms University, a masterpiece of the Baroque architect Johann Conrad Schlaun. Cycling through the promenade, you will learn about the fortifications of the Middle Ages that made Münster impregnable to enemies. Of course, the city center is also included, and with the cathedral, the town hall, and the Lambertikirche at Prinzipalmarkt, you will get an impression of Münster's old town. The bike tour ends at the hotel. Room allocation and individual evening activities.
Day 2 | Traces of Droste in the Münsterland
After breakfast, you start from the hotel. The park landscape of the Münsterland invites you to a leisurely bike tour. You will experience the Droste castles Haus Rüschhaus and Burg Hülshoff and learn interesting stories about the life of the greatest German poetess of the Biedermeier (no interior visit). Next, you head towards Steinfurt to the Bagno. This is a large, water-rich park and forest area at the water castle Burgsteinfurt. The oldest water castle complex in Westphalia stands on an island surrounded by the Steinfurter Aa. Since the castle is the private residence of the princes of Bentheim and Steinfurt, an interior visit is not possible. However, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the impressive historical building from the outside. The adjacent 50-hectare park owes its name to a small bathing house, Italian for “il bagno.” Count Karl zu Bentheim-Steinfurt fulfilled his dream of a pleasure garden in the 18th century with design influences from around the world. Along the way, there will be opportunities for a lunch snack or coffee and cake (at your own expense). In the late afternoon, you return to the hotel. The evening is free for your own activities.
Cycling distance: approx. 40 km (easy - moderate)
Day 3 | Castles that dream in the water –
Return Journey
Today's bike tour takes you through another part of the Münsterland, which is at least as charming as the route from the previous day. Passing by Schloss Senden and the most original of the Westphalian water castles, Burg Vischering, the destination of today's tour is the “Westphalian Versailles,” Schloss Nordkirchen. It was commissioned by Prince-Bishop Friedrich Christian von Plettenberg. Schloss Nordkirchen is located on an island surrounded by square moats in the midst of a large park, which, like the castle, was designed after the French model. After receiving much information in the castle park from your cycling guide, they will bid you farewell, and you will have some free time before the return journey in the early afternoon.
