Mountain Advent in Maria Alm

Mulled wine, punch & doughnuts

In front of the magnificent backdrop of the Stone Sea and the snow-capped peaks of the mighty Hochkönig lies Maria Alm – a village straight out of a picture book. It has been awarded the title of 'Most Beautiful Place in Salzburg Land' three times. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, the entire village transforms into a fairy-tale winter idyll. Alphorn and traditional musicians, old customs and traditions, concerts in one of the most beautiful pilgrimage churches in Pinzgau, and local specialties are just a few of the ingredients for a magical Advent experience. Turn your back on the hectic pre-Christmas season for a few days and relax in a dreamlike mountain landscape.

Travel Itinerary

Day 1 | Arrival in Maria Alm

Departure in the morning heading south. You will arrive in Maria Alm in the afternoon, refreshed. The hotel is already expecting you and warmly welcomes you. You will complete the day with a good dinner.

Day 2 | Atmospheric Pilgrimage Advent

In the morning, you will take your first stroll through the wonderful storybook village, visiting the pilgrimage church. Afterwards, you will enjoy a romantic horse-drawn carriage ride through the stunning mountain landscape around Maria Alm. Recharge with a relaxed “Advent snack” with mulled wine before heading to the Advent market in Maria Alm in the afternoon. Around the pilgrimage church, you will find traditionally designed huts made of dark old wood, mulled wine, gingerbread, and handicrafts. Creative light installations create a very special atmosphere. The sounds of the alphorn and folk musicians add to the idyllic Christmas atmosphere in the village square. You will return to your hotel for dinner.

Day 3 | Salzburg – Hellbrunn Advent Market

After a hearty breakfast, you will set off towards Salzburg. Be impressed by the beautiful landscape. Upon arrival in Salzburg, you will discover the most beautiful corners of the city during a guided tour. The heart of the city beats in the old town: the cathedral, Getreidegasse, festival houses, and Hohensalzburg Fortress, (outer bastion) Mozart's birthplace, and the residence will captivate you. Afterwards, you will have the opportunity for a little stroll through the Salzburg Christkindlmarkt. Salzburg's houses, streets, squares, and shops in the old town have dressed up and present themselves in Advent splendor. In the afternoon, you will visit the Hellbrunn Advent market. Just outside Salzburg, Hellbrunn Palace transforms into a pre-Christmas fairy tale. Over 700 conifer trees, decorated with red balls and fairy lights, illuminate the entire area in a festive glow as darkness falls. Stroll along the numerous small huts and let yourself be tempted by the culinary delights. Return to the hotel and dinner.

Day 4 | Zell am See – Mittersill – Kitzbühel

Via Zell am See, you will reach Mittersill. At the National Park Museum, you will learn everything important about the largest protected area in the Alps, its inhabitants, and their habitats in eight experiential worlds. Over the Pass Thurn, you will head to Kitzbühel, a name that sticks in your memory. The city became world-famous for its legendary “Hahnenkamm races.” You will return to Maria Alm via Saalfelden, impressed.

Day 5 | Return Journey

One last breakfast, and then it’s time to say goodbye.
