Wildschönau – more than just the Almabtrieb!

As summer slowly bids farewell and the peaks of the Kitzbühel Alps are bathed in warm autumn light, one of the most beautiful traditions of Tyrol begins in the Wildschönau: the Almabtrieb. Our journey to Oberau takes you into a landscape full of rustic alpine pastures, green mountain meadows, and living customs. Festively decorated cows return from the high pastures to the valley, accompanied by music, regional specialties, and genuine Tyrolean hospitality. Look forward to varied days in the Wildschönau, in the most beautiful valley of Tyrol.

Day 1 | Arrival in Tyrol

Departure in the morning and drive to Oberau in the Wildschönau. Check-in and then you will be welcomed with a drink and a joint dinner.

Day 2 | Alpine Pasture & Mountain Farmers Museum

Today it's off to the alpine pasture – through one of the most beautiful valleys in Tyrol – the Wildschönau! The sightseeing train takes you through the heart of the Kitzbühel Alps with stories about the valley, villages, and people, all the way to the famous Schönangeralm. There, the cheese king Johann Schönauer awaits you with a shot and may even reveal one or two secrets of his award-winning Emmental and mountain cheese. After a small tasting, lunch of “cheese noodles with salad” will be served, and in this idyllic setting on the sun terrace, you can enjoy your meal and relax! Afterward, nothing stands in the way of a digestive walk before you visit the mountain farmers museum “z’Bach” in the afternoon, which is housed in a well-preserved farmhouse from 1795. A walk through the mountain farmers museum is a journey back in time to the world of the ancestors of the Wildschönau. Over 1,200 exhibits vividly show the harsh life of Tyrolean mountain farmers. The exhibits have been collected from all over the valley. Return to the hotel and joint dinner.

Day 3 | Alpine Cattle Drive

After breakfast, you will visit the traditional cattle drive festival in the Wildschönau today. When the cows return from the alpine pastures to their home stables in the fall, everything is in motion. Culinary local delicacies await you, as well as musical entertainment for the “returnees.” From noon, the decorated cattle will be expected in the valley. As always, the cows are adorned with crowns made of alpine flowers and branches, the original meaning of which – to protect the animal from harm by covering it – has long been lost. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 4 | Zillertal

Today, enjoy a day trip to the beautiful Zillertal. Let yourself be enchanted by the impressive mountain scenery and spend relaxing hours in Mayrhofen. Stroll through the charming town, discover cozy cafés, and enjoy your free time according to your wishes. Return to the hotel and joint dinner.

Day 5 | Return Journey

After breakfast, you will begin your journey home with many new impressions.
