Travel Itinerary
Day 1 | Nancy – Arrival
Departure in the morning towards Burgundy. In the multifaceted ducal city of Nancy, you will make a stop around lunchtime. Stroll through the old town, the historical core of Nancy. Here, you will find a plethora of small shops, restaurants of all kinds, and cafés. After an individual stay, continue your journey to Beaune. Check into the hotel and enjoy dinner.
Day 2 | Beaune – Dijon
Yellow, black, green, and ochre are the colors of the splendid roofs of Beaune, which reach their peak in the Burgundian-Flemish style of the Hôtel-Dieu. After a visit to this hospital, which was still in use until 1971, you will continue towards Dijon. Felix Kir, once the mayor of Dijon, made an aperitif world-famous. The base for this is Cassis, which you will experience in Nuits-Saint-Georges at the Cassissium. Afterwards, you will continue along the wine route to Dijon. Splendid buildings and facades testify to flourishing epochs. At every corner, the past of the once-powerful Burgundian kingdom hides. Gourmets cannot miss Maille: here reside the kings of mustard, the Moutarde de Dijon. To conclude, enjoy a delicious dinner in a typical restaurant along the wine route.
Day 3 | Churches, Monasteries, Bold Celts
Today, you will start your excursion in the picturesque village of Vézelay. On a narrow ridge, the Basilica of Ste. Madeleine de Vézelay presents itself. Here, the relics of St. Mary Magdalene were allegedly found. The tympanum at the main portal and the capitals with scenes from the Old and New Testament delight every friend of Romanesque art. After an individual visit, you will continue to the Abbey of Fontenay, located in a secluded valley. The highlight of the nearly nine-hundred-year-old abbey is the cloister. Enjoy the peace and quiet. In the evening, visit an inn in the countryside and taste homemade delicacies and delicious wine.
Day 4 | Mâconnais
After breakfast, you will first travel to Cluny, known for the remains of the Benedictine abbey founded in 910. A part of the southern transept and some beautifully sculpted capitals still impress. In Bourgvilain, you will then be expected for a delicious lunch. Just a few meters from the famous Roche de Solutré rock, a prehistoric site, you will learn about the wines of Mâconnais, particularly the Pouilly-Fuissé at Château de Pierreclos. The birth of Romanesque art is represented by the former abbey church of Saint-Philibert in Tournus, which stands strong like a fortress yet is flooded with light in this charming town on the banks of the Saône. The dinner at the Auberge du Vieux Vigneron south of Beaune is also a wine lover's delight.
Day 5 | Metz – Return Journey
After a hearty breakfast, you will start your journey home with many wonderful impressions. In Metz, you will make a stop. Around the Cathedral of St. Étienne, you can stroll through the medieval streets of the Colline Sainte-Croix hill or wander towards the Moselle. In the afternoon, begin your journey home.
