Lake Constance

On the way at the 'Swabian Sea'

Due to its size, Lake Constance is also referred to as the "Swabian Sea." Three islands are located in the lake: Lindau, Reichenau, and the well-known flower island Mainau. The lakeshore is lined with many romantic spots, surrounded by vineyards, orchards, and numerous flowers that thrive in the mild climate. Germany's largest inland lake, bordered by Switzerland and Austria, always offers an attractive travel destination with its unique landscape.

Itinerary

Day 1 | Arrival at Lake Constance

Departure in the morning and drive to Friedrichshafen. After checking into your room, you can explore the city on your own. Individual dinner.

Day 2 | Meersburg – Mainau Island

Drive along the shores of Lake Constance to Meersburg. The particularly attractive location of Meersburg, built on a steep vineyard slope directly by the lake, has attracted people for centuries. Since 2004, Meersburg has been a member of the German Half-Timbered House Route – one of the major tourist routes in Germany. After a short city walk, you will take a boat to Mainau Island. Under the patronage of the Swedish royal family, the island has become a true plant fairy tale. An attraction is the butterfly house with exotic species from around the world. In the afternoon, you will return by bus to your hotel in Friedrichshafen. Individual dinner.

Day 3 | Lindau – Bregenz

Drive to Lindau. Lindau was originally a fishing settlement, named after the convent “Our Lady under the Lindens” founded in the early 9th century. In the old town, you can still find many streets shaped by Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles. During a guided tour, you will get to know the historic island town. Afterwards, you have some free time and the opportunity for an individual lunch break. In the afternoon, you will travel to the festival city of Bregenz, beautifully located on the eastern shore of Lake Constance at the foot of the impressive Pfänder massif. Here you have free time and the option to take the Pfänder cable car to the Pfänder – the most beautiful viewpoint in the Lake Constance region. Individual dinner.

Day 4 | Staad – St. Gallen – Appenzeller Land

Today you will take an excursion to Switzerland. On the way, between Staad and Altenrhein, you will find the market hall designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Here you will make a short sightseeing stop. Golden onion domes, bright colors, curved lines, uneven windows, uneven floors, colorful ceramic columns, shady walkways, and green roofs are the characteristics of Hundertwasser's architecture. Continue to St. Gallen. A UNESCO World Heritage city, a lake that connects three countries, and in the north of Switzerland forms the “Happy End” of the country, are the key elements of the St. Gallen-Lake Constance region. Discover the “City of Books and Knowledge” not far from the lovely landscape of the “Swabian Sea.” Afterwards, drive through the Appenzeller Land to Schwägalp, the valley station of Säntis. In the afternoon, you will return to Friedrichshafen by ferry. Individual dinner.

Day 5 | Constance – Journey Home

After breakfast, you will head home. In Constance, you will make a short stop. The picturesque old town with its numerous medieval buildings stretches between the Rhine and the Swiss border. The new town nestles against the gentle slopes of the Bodanrück. Individual sightseeing stop and then journey home.
